LOSING SCOUT

The last week and a half have been so difficult. Scout my beautiful 2 year old paint pony came down with Potomac Horse Fever. We lost him Thursday night. I can't begin to tell you how devastated we are. We sat with him for hours, traveling the hour to get to the clinic where he was on an IV to replenish fluids and plasma. Many told me that the money wasn't worth it, but I know Scout was. I know that I did everything I could, but it still is just heart breaking.

I do not know how to get over this loss, I doubt I ever will. It is different with horses, I don't know why. But it is true. You connect with them in a way you never will another animal. And sometimes other people.
Scout was a silly little boy, with a great sense of humor. He was sweet and loving and adored children. He had funny little antics and wanted to be the center of attention. But most of all, he was a Mama's boy. My sweet little boy.
The other horses are mourning the loss of Scout as well. They look for him and come up to me and nudge me trying to understand. Even little Tinkerbell was trying so hard to see into his stall, stretching up as high as she could go, looking for him. They are a close knit herd and it is so sad to see their grief.
Roy Rogers once said, "The best thing for the inside of a person is the outside of a horse". I truly believe he was right.

Oh no, I am so sad to read this....you're right with horses its different. It's so sad and unfortunate he had to die so young, but thank god he had you while he was alive. He was loved and happy.

I am SO sorry! My family are total horse people, my daughter's in pony club, we have two horses {one's a pony} ... I haven't had to experience the loss of a horse, but know many that have, and it's incredibly painful.

These animals are people to us. They take care of us. We trust them, they trust us. It's a very unique and loving bond ... yes, that's different than with other animals and you're right, some humans too!

My daughter's dream is to have a paint ... Scout is beautiful.

You are blessed to have had him and to have known him. I'm guessing there are many things he taught you and you need to hold to those and remember.

My prayers are with you guys ...

I just came across your site by accident and I've scoured every inch of it. I have to say - from an aspiring photographer to a very talented, professional one - that your photographs are beautiful and touching, but nothing moved me as much as this post in your blog about Scout. I can't say that I've ever had the privelage or honour to have a horse (although I dream I will someday), however I do understand the deep connection people build with their horses and I am so terribly sorry for your loss. I hold you in my heart and prayers.

Thank you all. I really appreciate it. We are moving on but still walk around with a sadness everytime we are in the barn. It just isn't the same without him. Diesel is so sad without him and now can't be without Brownie. Tinkerbell is completely and almost obnoxiously attached to me now. She wants to be with me all the time, which is adorable when you think about the fact that I am being shadowed by a little white pony. Brownie just makes sure he keeps his herd together.

Again I appreciate the thoughtfulness and the sincerity.

OMG...I can so relate to your loss and feel so sad for you..My daughter recently lost her little two year old Biscuit...she cried for weeks and was an emotional wreck. She colic and my daughter was up all day and night with her..She told me that she was afraid to go to sleep for Biscuit would not make it until morning..but I promised her that Biscuit would be there in the morning...I stayed up all night with her and around 5:30 Teha came out to the barn and spent the rest of the day with her. Every pony deserves a little girl...but every horse deserves to be loved by a little girl...I am so sorry for your loss..our prayers are with you..

I'm so sorry. What a tragedy. I've never owned a horse, but dreamed of it since I was a little girl. I pray that God would give you much comfort in this trial. Be blessed and renewed.

Always,

Rebecca

I am so sorry for your loss. I don't know if it is different with orses, but I can't imagine it is. We love with our hearts. We don't cose ow hard to fall or who to fall with. We love strong and honestly, to get that in return whether from a horse, a dog or a bird will hurt the loved one just the same. As someone who as lost, I feel your pain and will leave you with something that I read every once in a wile when I catch myself crying over my past Charles.

....Grieve not,
Nor speak of me with tears,
but laugh and talk of me as if I were beside you.....
I loved you so-
Twas Heaven here wit you.

Take care my friend.

This brought tears to my eyes.. . I am deeply sorry.

Animals of all shapes and sizes have a way with capturing our souls. The silence in their eyes tell us so much we can't hear, but we can feel it. They see something in us that no one else can, and that is why they love us so.
God Bless You and Your Family.
